Railway Station Masters
Coordinator: Dr Sue Smith

The project's aim was to cast some light on the lives of railway station masters in 19th century Britain. For the purposes of the project the project coordinator identified individuals who were enumerated as railway station masters in the 1881 census. Where possible, these station masters have been identified by the counties in which members reside. In some cases, this was not possible, and we have therefore allocated one in a neighbouring county or in a county not covered by our membership.

Sources were the Census Enumerators' Books to locate these career railway station masters. Members who had the appropriate subscriptions or other means of access, such as via a local library or record office, were able to use the online indices of Ancestry.com , Find My Past or other similar websites to trace their progression of an individual and their families from one census to another.

The results of the project are available to members in the Members' Community (Login required) and were published in the Society's newsletter.
